How do I play online?
Create an account, then open the app, sign in, and tap "Play Online." From there, tap "Invite Friend" to challenge someone by username, or "Quick Match" to start a game against a random opponent.
What are the rules?
The rules are simple to learn but the strategy runs deep. The app has a built-in tutorial that walks you through everything. You'll be playing in minutes.
How long do I have to make a move?
There's no time pressure until your opponent is waiting on you. Once they've moved, you have 72 hours to respond or you forfeit your turn.
Can I play on multiple devices?
Yes! Sign in with the same account on any device. Your games, ratings, and preferences stay in sync.
I forgot my password
Tap "Forgot password?" on the login screen in the app. You'll receive an email with a link to reset your password.
How does the rating system work?
What the Shell uses the Glicko-2 rating system. You start at 1500, and your rating adjusts after each game based on the outcome and your opponent's rating — beating a stronger player earns more points.
How can I see my rating and statistics?
Ratings aren't shown in the app. To see your rating, win/loss record, and other stats, sign in at
whattheshell.games/login. If you reach the Top 10, you'll also see a special message there.
